THURMOND, W.VA (SWVO) – Built around 1900, the historic Fatty Lipscomb House in Thurmond began as a boarding house and has remained a recognizable part of the town’s character for over a century.
The Littlepage family once lived on the first floor, renting out the upper level to boarders.
Well into the 1980s, it continued serving guests—particularly whitewater rafters—securing its reputation as a local guesthouse.
In 1987, the house gained wider attention when it was featured as a boarding house in the film Matewan, which used much of Thurmond as a backdrop.
Though commonly referred to as the Fatty Lipscomb House, its official listing on the National Register of Historic Places names it the “John Bullock/Roger Armandtrout House.”
