LANSING, WV (SWVO) – The annual New River Gorge Rim to Rim Race is taking place this morning, bringing runners from across the region to experience one of the most scenic — and challenging — races in West Virginia.
The 6-mile road race starts on the south side of the New River Gorge, sending participants down Fayette Station Road (Route 82), across the river, and back up to the opposite rim, with a short trail section leading to the finish.
Along the way, runners will tackle a descent and climb of 1,300 feet, with sections reaching a steep 20% incline — a stretch dubbed the “Burma Burn.”
Due to the event, Fayette Station Road will be closed to all traffic until 10 AM. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes during this time.
Hosted by Active Southern West Virginia, the race ends at Adventures on the Gorge resort, where participants can enjoy a catered brunch and take in panoramic views from the rimside pool.
Racers were bussed from the finish area to the start line earlier this morning.
While some choose to run, walkers are welcome, as long as they maintain a 20-minute mile pace to finish within the road closure window.
