Mysterious stone face located atop the New River Gorge | Southern West Virginia Online archived photo

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.VA. (SWVO) – Tucked away just off County Route 82, also known as Fayette Station Road, lies a mysterious stone carving that has long intrigued hikers and rock climbers exploring the New River Gorge.

The stone face, carved into a rock wall along a well-used trail, bears the inscription “May 1906.” Not far from the face, another rock is marked with “JOHNSON 8 ‘54,” a clue that could hint at the artist behind the unusual feature.

Nearby evidence of former homes or structures suggests the area may have once been inhabited, though by 1957, aerial imagery indicates it had become vacant.

According to local legend, the carving was created by a coal miner who once lived nearby and worked at a local mine.

The story has remained a topic of quiet fascination for visitors to the area.

However, in the wake of media attention in 2022, “No Trespassing” signs have reportedly been placed at the entrance to the trail.

While the archived photos featured in this article and on social media show the stone face as it appeared in previous years, visitors should be aware that the site is now considered private property.

Those interested in local legends and history are encouraged to enjoy the many public trails and scenic spots throughout the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.
