WEST VIRGINIA (SWVO) – Coronado Global Resources plans to idle seven coal mining operations in southern West Virginia and permanently lay off approximately 530 workers beginning in mid-April, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the state of West Virginia.
The notice, submitted under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, states that layoffs are expected to begin April 14, 2026, or within a 14-day period starting on that date.
The company indicated that all separations will be permanent and that affected employees will not have bumping rights.
In the filing, Greenbrier Minerals LLC, an affiliate of Coronado Global Resources, cited “current adverse market conditions” as the reason for the decision. The WARN Act requires employers to provide advance notice to employees and state officials in cases of large-scale layoffs or facility closures.
The operations slated to be idled in full include the Toney Fork Surface Mine, Elk Lick Loadout, Powellton #1 Mine and Saunders Prep Plant, all located in Lorado. Also affected are the Lower War Eagle #1 Mine in Cyclone, the Muddy Bridge Mine in Davin and the Eagle No. 1 Mine in Lorado.
In addition to the mining sites, the company plans workforce reductions at its Rich Creek/Lyburn administrative office in Lyburn.
According to the WARN notice, employees are expected to continue reporting to work as scheduled until their respective termination dates. Workers will be compensated through regular payroll procedures, and benefits, including health insurance, will remain in effect until the layoffs take place.
Greenbrier Minerals operates as an affiliate of Coronado Global Resources which is headquartered in Australia.
This comes as another West Virginia company in Tucker County also announced layoffs recently.
