GLEN JEAN, WV (SWVO) – The Tailwaters Campground at Gauley River National Recreation Area will temporarily close for the start of “Gauley Season,” National Park Service officials announced.

The closure begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, and will last three weeks before the campground reopens on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Officials said the closure is necessary to improve access to the upper Gauley during one of the busiest times of year for both private boaters and commercial rafting companies.

The space will be used to add about 50 additional parking sites, helping to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

River put-ins and take-outs will continue to operate as usual, with no charge for access or parking.

During the closure, camping will be available at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Battle Run Campground at Summersville Lake, Summersville Lake State Park, and several private campgrounds in the area.

Information on reservations, rates, and payment options can be found on individual websites or by calling the facilities directly.

For updates and details on closures, visit the Gauley River National Recreation Area’s website at nps.gov/gari.
