FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (SWVO) – Just north of Thurmond, about a half-mile along the New River, sits the ghost town of Dimmock, a once small but active mining community that has now faded into history.

Nestled between the former towns of Echo and Beury, Dimmock has all but disappeared, leaving behind only scattered traces of its past.

Today, visitors can still find remnants such as stone foundations, rusting wash tubs, old insulators, pieces of rail right-of-way, and the partial body of a Buick car.

That Buick holds a special place in local lore.

In the early 1900s, it is said that the car’s owner had it lowered down Beury Mountain and would spend Sundays driving it back and forth across his yard, reportedly putting about 100 miles on the vehicle without ever leaving the community.

Though little remains, Dimmock carries a lasting connection to the region’s history.

It is also remembered as the birthplace of Melcenia Fields, Beury’s last resident, who became a well-known figure in the community’s final years…. A story on Fields is coming soon.

Once a bustling coal town, Dimmock now stands abandoned.
