KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (SWVO) – Hundreds of people were forced to sleep in their vehicles overnight on a portion of the West Virginia Turnpike due to flooding.

According to West Virginia 511, the northbound lanes at mile marker 77.5 near the toll booths were completely shut down beginning late last night and stretching to early Friday morning.

The traffic backup stretched for miles with many forced to sleep overnight in their vehicles.

There were a lucky few who found a way to turn around and take alternate routes.

For those who didn’t, multiple people report being stuck in traffic from after 9 PM last night to after 6 AM this morning.

Law enforcement allegedly rolled through early Friday morning with sirens ringing to wake up those forced to stay overnight.

Officials report that the road has since reopened but West Virginia 511 is still showing various traffic alerts along the West Virginia Turnpike.
