(SWVO) – As spring temperatures climb across southern West Virginia, bear sightings and encounters are on the rise, prompting local concern and increased efforts to reduce human-bear conflicts.
In Nicholas County, officials at the Veterans Memorial Park reported evidence of a black bear in the area earlier this month.
Park staff discovered bear tracks near recreational facilities and have since been working with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) to safely trap and relocate the animal.
Farther south, users in the “New River Gorge National Park & Surrounding Area” Facebook group have also reported bear activity, including one hiker who reported seeing a bear along the Kaymoor Trail in New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.
These accounts reflect a broader trend happening across the region, as bears emerge from hibernation and begin searching for easy food sources.
Spring is typically a peak time for black bear activity, especially in May and June when bears come out of their dens.
Human-related food sources, such as garbage or bird seed, are often more calorie-rich and easier to access than natural ones. This can draw bears into parks, neighborhoods, and campsites.
Black bears are a valued part of West Virginia’s ecosystem and cultural identity, but when they become accustomed to human-related food, they can lose their fear of people.
This can lead to more frequent and potentially dangerous encounters.
To reduce the chances of bear encounters, residents and visitors are encouraged to take the following steps:
- Secure trash and only place it outside on the morning of pickup.
- Remove bird feeders before mid-March.
- Bring pet food inside after feeding.
- Clean grills after each use and store them in a secure place.
- While camping, store food and scented items in bear-proof containers or hang them at least 10 feet off the ground and away from trees.
If a bear is encountered, it’s important not to approach. Staying calm, backing away slowly, making noise to alert the bear, and being prepared to use bear spray if necessary are key steps.
In the rare event of an attack, people should not play dead but fight back aggressively.
