Tram construction continues at Hawks Nest State Park in Ansted, W.VA.

ANSTED, W.VA. (SWVO) – Construction of a new tram system at Hawks Nest State Park continues with planned completion slated for later this year.

Hawks Nest State Park, one of the most scenic in the state, has undergone multiple upgrades over the last few years with the most notable being its tram system.

The previous tram system had its final run in 2021 after funding was allocated for an entirely new tram system.

The old tram system opened in 1970, providing over 50 years of transportation to the bottom of the New River Gorge.

The current tram system will continue the tradition but with a more modern look.

Officials say the new system will feature three cars designed to hold six people each, and will be fully ADA-accessible.

There will also be a freight car dedicated to transport kayaks and other outdoor equipment.

The trip will take one from the top of the gorge down 465 feet with a total travel length of about 1,100 feet.

From there, visitors can hike the Hawks Nest Rail Trail, take a jet boat ride, watch trains, or enjoy a scenic picnic.

The new tram system is expected to open to the public later this year, no official opening date has been set at this time.
